Simple Herbal Remedy for Nausea

NAUSEA REMEDY -Easy herbal tea for relaxing and settling the stomach: taken from the "RECIPE" page of our website http://www.theherbarium.com/

Supplies Needed:

1/2 ounce dried Organic Mint (more if fresh leaves)
1/2 ounce dried Organic Raspberry leaves
1 tbsp. Brown Sugar
2 Cups Water

Directions:
Boil water, take off the heat. Add Mint and Raspberry leaves. Cover and infuse for 20 minutes. Strain herbs out of water. Add sugar to water and reheat for 5 minutes. Cool and store in refrigerator if desired.

Dose: 1 tbsp - 2 tbsp with first onset of nausea. Repeat every 30 minutes until you feel better.

I was looking in the Whole Foods magazine March 2011 edition, when I came accross this article.

Alexandria, Va- Dietary supplements were not responsible for any deaths in 2009, according to the U.S. national Poison Data System. The system is composed of data from 60 poison centers across the United States....More than 50% of Americans take nutritional supplements every day. If each of these people were to take only one pill every day, over 57 billion pills would be taken every year.

Taking into consideration some of the negative coverage from the main stream media, I would say that is one heck of a safety record for an "unregulated" industry. Now, compare those numbers to the pharmaceutical industry record... I rest my case.

Here's our EASY recipe for a Garlic Steam~

Supplies Needed:
4-6 good sized cloves of Fresh garlic and boiled water
Directions:
Take 4-6 good sized cloves of fresh garlic, peeled and chopped very fine. Put garlic in a large bowl. Fill the bowl 3/4 full with freshly boiled water. Cover. Make a tent with a large towel over your head, shoulder, and bowl. remove the cover, close your eyes, Breathe Deeply.

I will be teaching Italic and the Simple Modern Hand

After many requests I'm back to teaching Calligraphy. I have a class scheduled to start Thursday evening, March 31st from 6:30pm - 8pm and running each Thursday evening from 5-6 weeks. Depending on how big the class is and how quickly we learn. Cost is $105 per person and I will supply the paper and the pens. The only exception is left handers who will have to puchase a special pen, which I will pick up for them.

Space is limited. A $50 deposit will guarantee your seat. I want to keep the classes small so that the student will get as much help as they need.

Allergy Alert!

Here it is March 1, and it may seem early for some to be thinking about allergy season,but this really is the time to start. If you are using honey or bee pollen, begin now. You will need several weeks to get your body sufficiently resistant to the pollens and other allergens. When possible use local honey (ours is from South Deerfield) and pollen, since these are the allergens to which you will be most exposed.

I am really happy to announce to our long time customers that Dr. Clayton Sinus-ade is back and available. This stuff is amazing. I have used it over the last 27 years and have found it helps in the short term, and the longer you use it, the less you will use. If you don't like capsules, we also have Aller-calm and Allerease in tincture and liquid formulas. Get ready for the allergy season now, instead of waiting and suffering later.

Cayenne JUMP START

Here's one of Kathleen Duffy's popular formulas for cold & flu symptoms~

CAYENNE JUMP-START

1 cup freshly brewed chamomile tea
1 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tsp cayenne powder
1 tsp ginger powder
1 tsp horseradish

Add the vinegar, cayenne, ginger & horseradish to the hot chamomile tea. Cover & let steep for 10 min over very low heat. Strain. Bottle in a clean glass bottle with a tight lid.

DOSE: 1 tsp to 1TBSP in tomato or V-8 juice every 2-4 hours as needed to relieve cold or flu symptoms.
Take the lower dose in the morning to "get going" instead of coffee.

Summer coming to an end...Refresh with Lavender Shea butter Moisturizing Soap

It has been a busy summer here at the HERBARIUM. We had our fresh herbs brighten up the front of the shop. Drawing new customers in with excitement to use their new herbs for culinary use or to add a little pep to their garden. There has been a rise in book sales as well. People have been drawn to the educational books about herbs, aromatherapy, stone healing, and bath and beauty home recipes. This accompanied with our Free Literature and Jonathan's monthly article in Prime Magazine has shown to be just what the HERBARIUM community needed. It's refreshing to see such a thirst for knowledge and people utilizing their opportunity to supplement for optimum health.

Somehow we still found time to create a new soap. HERBARIUM's very own Lavender Shea Butter Moisturizing soap. This soap is one of my new favorites. It is especially good for those who tend toward dry hands because the bit of shea butter hydrates while the lavender essential oil refreshes and soothes the skin.
Now that we're headed into the cooler seasons we don't have to worry about repetitive hand washing drying out our skin when we use the Lavender Shea Butter Moisturizing soap. I hope you too will have the chance to try it!

BETTER BUTTER

Just added a New "Herbarium RECIPES" page on our website and we've got lots of Recipes & Formulas from over the years that we'll be putting in there.

Here's the BETTER BUTTER recipe that we've been giving out & making at home~

BETTER BUTTER (adapted from Laurel's Kitchen by Laurel Robertson)

1 cup light olive oil or safflower oil
2 sticks organic butter softened
2 tbsp water
2 tbsp dry milk (optional)
1 tsp lecithin powder or granules

Blend well and mix into appropriate size containers. Cover well

All the flavor of butter but the saturated fat is reduced by 50%
The lecithin powder or granules is included to give more "fat busting" power to the spread. Use as you would regular butter in any recipe but this spread is not good for frying. It also gets very soft at room temperature. ENJOY!

POISON IVY REMEDY

Works every time!!

Gently wash area with mild soap & water. Let dry. Place Hyland's Homeopathic Poison Ivy Remedy pellets under tongue. Repeat as label instructs. Heavily spray the poison ivy with HerbPharm's Grindellia spray or the HERBARIUM's Oak & Ivy spray. Air dry.
Mix green clay with a tea of chamomile & plantain leaves to pudding consistency. Generously apply to area & cover with plastic wrap. Change when clay dries out or twice each day. Relief is immediate and skin heals quickly. May be used on small or large areas.

Feverfew, (Tanacetum parthenium)

Another perennial, feverfew gets it's name from it's old-time reputation of cooling down a fever but it is not used for that, today. Commercially prepared as a standardized extract, feverfew, today, is an excellent remedy for migraine headaches. Planted in a sunny spot, feverfew will be very happy & the small daisy-like flowers will bloom June through July brightening up any corner of the yard.

The most well known source of Dragon's Blood and the species we use is Croton lechleri, ranging primarily from the rainforests and low mountains of Columbia and Bolivia. Our Dragon's Blood is sustainably harvested along the Ucayali River in Amazonian Peru.

When the trunk of the Dragon's Blood tree is cut or injured, a thick, blood-red sap oozes from the wound. This pure sap, without any alcohol, additives or processing, constitutes the medicine known as Dragon's Blood.

Dragon's Blood sap is a rich, complex source of phyto-chemicals including alkaloids and procyanidins (condensed tannins). Internally, it is an important remedy for gastro-intentinal disorders, particularly ulcers and diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea.

Valerian

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

A perennial plant common to the US and found growing wild all over Europe. When harvested & dried, the roots have a characteristic smell of "dirty socks" but while the plant is growing, it's pretty, white flowers smell sweet like baby powder !

Valerian root, in it's many forms, capsules, tea, extract or tincture is calming, relaxing, antispasmodic & pain relieving. The smell of "old socks" becomes the smell of sleep & relaxation.

Be careful where you plant valerian...cat's LOVE it & will dig it up to eat the roots. Valerian thrives in poorly drained, damp soil and in partial shade.

BugZaway~

The HERBARIUM's Safe & Effective Insect Repellent~

Kathleen developed BugZaway many years ago when her children were quite young. She as concerned about the kids inhaling and absorbing toxic chemicals, skin irritations and allergic reactions from chemical based insect repellents. Using her extensive knowledge of the herbs, Kathleen set about to blend a safe and effective insect spray for her family. She "field tested" her combination against several over-the-counter brands. The results were impressive. The bugs buzzed but wouldn't bite, where mosquitoes seemed quite immune to the commercial sprays.

BugZaway had its toughest test in the Far East. Some customers were going to Malaysia for 3 months and needed a good and safe bug spray. They reported back that BugZaway worked beautifully.

The reason BugZaway works is very simple. Insects exposed to chemicals can and have developed immunity to them. "Mother Nature" changes the chemical makeup of plants constantly. The insects never have and never will become immune to the plants natural oils. BugZaway repels mosquitoes, gnats, black flies, no-see-ums, fleas and ticks. BF & C update

No bones about it~

Even after all these years of working with the herbs, it never ceases to amaze me just how fast they can work. I was bowling Wednesday night in Northampton and one of the league members came by to chat. He was off that night due to an injury to his ribs. I gave him four capsules of an old formula called BFC. We use it for any broken bones, sprains strains etc.He came back to me about an hour later and told me the pain had subsided quite a bit.I know the stuff is good, but that was amazing! He was at the Herbarium the very next morning. I will see him tonite, and find out how he is doing. I just hope we are not bowling against him tonite. I hate to give the opponent any edge that I don't have to.

Kathy's Magic Salve has been a true staple here at the HERBARIUM!
For over 30 years we've supplied our customers with this Wonderful Healing salve and the Feedback has been overwelming! I literally can't keep it in stock.

Here's a batch I made this morning and the list of herbs that are at a very low simmer in Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Organic Golden Seal Root
Organic Echinacea Angustifolia Root
Organic Burdock Root
Organic Comfrey Root
Organic Myrrh Powder
Organic Plantain Leaves
Organic Lobelia
Organic Calendula Flowers

First the Roots are added and simmered and then the leaves & petals. Everything is strained thru unbleached cheesecloth and then back to the heat for the organic beeswax.

Here's the Magic Salve Cooling~

The most common uses for this salve is Eczema, Psoriasis, Dry Skin, Cuts, Abrasions, Wounds, even Diaper Rash (used it on my own kids)......the list goes on.

We teach our customers the importance of keeping the Magic Salve free of contamination. Use a cotton ball or swab when applying the salve. Never stick your fingers into the jar.

Cleaning Frenzy~

Clean, Clear & De-Cluttered!
There's has been MANY positive changes at the HERBARIUM lately and clearing out our backroom "clutter" has been a very important one!

Old shelves & office furniture have been donated & recycled. Lots & lots of paper work, literature & herb books have been sorted and filed. New work space has been created and of course everything has been cleaned and "Smudged".

It has been exhausting work but very, very rewarding! A renewed energy has taken place at the HERBARIUM and I'm looking forward to enjoying our "Creative-Space" again :)

During this Back-Room cleaning adventure, I added a few drops of Lemon & Lime Essential Oils to my dust cloth. Besides killing cooties, these oils smelled Wonderful ~ which made the job a little easier :)

Getting Ready for Winter~

After a Cheerful Christmas at the HERBARIUM (thanks to all of our customers) we are getting ready for the Winter Ahead~

It's only 16 degrees outside today, the Open flag is about to fly down the street and yet the customers are streaming in! I thought I'd take a break and post some recent pics I took of our plants that have been brought in for the Winter.

Here's one of the creeping Rosemary plants that's still going strong. I have to touch it every time I walk by :)

We're keeping it near the front windows where it's much cooler. Hope it survives the winter.

This Parsley plant is looking Gorgeous!!

I move it around the shop and place it next to different displays~ It seems to makes everything else look Better!

At the HERBARIUM we've been stocking up on Amber bottles, jars and hard to find items for Handmade Herbal Goodies too!

This is a great time of year to go thru your Herbal recipes & formulas, stay home and MAKE something! Salves, Lotions, Massage Oils, Bath Salts....whatever you've been wanting to make, we've got lots of supplies & experience! Remembering the Plants

Winter is coming. Not here (MA) yet, but coming for sure. Winter brings the holidays, indoor activities, shorter days & longer nights but winter also brings a chance for us to review the previous year and become more reflective. It's also a good time to count our blessings...express our gratitude.
While we are thankful for all our blessings, let's not forget to be grateful for the plants; especially, herbs & spices.

We are excited about Thanksgiving, Christmas, the New Year and all the other holidays that come during that time...and with these holidays comes some of our favorite foods. How dull and boring these foods would be without the flavorful zip of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves.....the familiar smell & taste of poultry seasoning with it's celery, sage, thyme, black pepper overtones. Mulled cider without the warm aroma/flavor of star anise, cinnamon, cloves & orange peels would be plain ol' cider. Think how different our meal would be without herbs like rosemary, parsley, cilantro on our veggies and in our salads.

Along with these yummy flavors & aromas comes the health giving activities of herbs, spices & essential oils. Aiding our digestion...helping us to absorb the nutrients in the meal...anti-oxidant behavior to strengthen our immune systems and to keep our bodies functioning well....reducing the effects of stress...enhancing relaxation.
So, this holiday season, when you are giving thanks, try to remember the plants. They are gifts to be treasured. Whether we are eating them as our food, feasting on their beauty with our eyes, enjoying the uplifting, strengthening aromas of essential oils....give thanks for their strengths, their beauty & their service to humankind. Paper Catalog

Besides the New Website, we're also working on getting the PAPER Catalog finished!

We feel it's important to have both available for our customers and since our last big "update" there's so many more products on our shelves. Thanks to Jonathan! He just can't help himself...always learning about "New & Improved" products and staying on top of things :)

Things Are Happening!!

Besides this New Blog ~ we're SUPER excited about the Herbarium's New Website!! My goal is to have it finished in another month. LOTS and LOTS of work but it will be well worth it! The new site will be user friendly and "manager" friendly. Can't Wait!!
